 TOUR DETAILS:
A five centre inn-to-inn, self-guided walking tour along the Ridgeway National Path from Goring-on-Thames in Oxfordshire to Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire, England. 5 nights bed and breakfast accommodation, 4 days walking, luggage transfer, guide book and maps.
This Explore Britain Ridgeway National Path tour follows the eastern part of that ancient pathway along a chalk escarpment that extends for 85 miles from Avebury in Wiltshire, with its famous stone circle, to Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire. On a route of truly ancient origins it should not be surprising to find such an abundance of evidence of early occupation. Bronze Age and early Iron Age have left a remarkable legacy in the form of religious monuments, fortifications, habitations, burial places and agricultural systems. From the first steps it is clear that the Ridgeway Path is an ancient route.
The route from Goring-on-Thames winds its way through the Chiltern Hills, passing through beautiful Oxfordshire, Berkshire and Buckinghamshire villages, where time has stood still. The hills lie principally on fast-draining chalk and flint soils, which encourage the beech woods for which they are famous. The hills are today much as they were in the Middle Ages - a mainly wooded land of small villages and towns, largely located in valleys and undeveloped by manufacturing industry. The Ridgeway Path finally reaches Tring and an extension takes you to Ivinghoe Beacon with extensive views other the Buckinghamshire countryside.
You stop in country hotels, inns and guesthouses along the way, where accommodation is available in twin, double or single rooms, most but not all with private facilities. Bed and Breakfast and luggage transfer between the overnight stays is inclusive.

 DAILY and OVERNIGHT SCHEDULE of the 5 Nights Hike Ridgeway Path from Goring to Ivinghoe England tour:
These are the usual booked overnight stays, walks or rides, we occasionally may have to make a late change, if so, you will be advised ahead of time or at your first guesthouse. The guided tours may be adjusted at the leaders discretion, due to weather and groups ability.
START: Goring-on-Thames is about 14 miles south of Oxford.
FINISH: Tring is about 25 miles east of Oxford.
DAY ONE: Arrival at Goring-on-Thames. You may arrive anytime after 3pm. Dinner can be taken at the inn in the village (not included in tour price). Overnight Goring-on-Thames, Oxfordshire, England.
DAY TWO: Hiking from Goring to Nuffield. 9.3 miles (14.9km) and 800 feet ascent. Leaving the River Thames behind you gradually move through farmland and into the Chiltern Hills. Here the village houses are made of small bricks, flints and chalk. Dinner is taken at the nearby inn in the village (not included in tour price). Overnight Nuffield, Oxfordshire, England.
DAY THREE: Hiking from Nuffield to Chinnor. 11 miles (17.7km) and 900 feet ascent. Continuing through the Chilterns past the villages of Lewknor to arrive at Chinnor. Dinner is taken at the nearby inns in the town (not included in tour price). Overnight Chinnor, Oxfordshire, England.
DAY FOUR: Hiking from Chinnor to Wendover. 11.2 miles (18km) and 1,400 feet ascent. Moving into Buckinghamshire the hills give way to farmland again with two view points at Pulpit and Coombe Hills. Wendover is one of the biggest towns the trail goes through. Dinner is taken at the nearby inns in the town (not included in tour price). Overnight Wendover, Buckinghamshire, England.
DAY FIVE: Hiking from Chinnor to Ivinghoe Beacon (return to Aldbury). 13.6 miles (21.8km) and 1,200 feet ascent. You will follow the Ridgeway Path out to Ivinghoe Beacon and return more or less the same way to finish at Aldbury. Dinner is taken at the nearby inns in the town (not included in tour price). Overnight Aldbury, Hertfordshire, England.
DAY SIX: Departure. The tour finishes at Aldbury after breakfast.
 USEFUL TRAVEL INFORMATION:
 TRAVEL BY TRAIN FROM EUROPE: There is a fast frequent Eurostar rail service to the new Eurostar Terminal at London St Pancras (next to Kings Cross and Euston) from Paris, Bruxelles and Lille. These stations are linked with the rest of mainland europe (France, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Italy). Check Eurostar and TGV across Europe Tickets times and fares by the fast convenient Eurostar. Book your ticket in advance, turn up at the rail station and go! In the time you are waiting at an airport you can be at your destination with much less stress - travel by train. You could even bring your car with you.
RAIL TRAVEL from LONDON to GORING (NOT included in tour price): The nearest rail station is Goring & Streatley served by frequent trains from London Paddington.
RAIL TRAVEL from ALDBURY to TRING and LONDON (NOT included in tour price): The nearest rail station is Tring served by frequent trains to London Euston.
ARRIVING and DEPARTING by EUROLINES or NATIONAL EXPRESS COACH: This is by far the cheapest option for long-dstance travel in England, Scotland, and Wales. There are very convenient buses from each major airport.  GRADE and CLOTHING INFORMATION:
This Hike Ridgeway Path from Goring to Ivinghoe England is Grade C. You can check the tour grade is suitable for you by viewing our Tour Grade page.
GRADE C: Between 9 - 12 miles (14 - 19 kms) a day. Waterproof walking boots are desirable. You will start walking about 9:30am and finish at approx. 5pm. These grades are for guidance only. For any grade, depending on weather conditions, it may at times be damp underfoot, so waterproof boots are preferable.

Where bookings are made less than 2 months before the start day of the tour, the full amount is payable at the time of booking. Upon receipt of your confirmation and deposit, I will confirm with the accommodation immediately and normally have a trip fully booked within a week. This will include a Trip Information Sheet specific to your tour; with overnight names, addresses and telephone numbers (similar to the draft trip information sheet on the website). You would need to take out Travel Insurance within 14 days to be fully covered. |

Upon receipt of final payment, which is due 2 months before the tour starts, I will air mail you the maps, notes and a further copy of your trip information sheet. If we do not receive the final payment we will presume you have decided NOT to go-ahead with the tour, and we will therefore cancel the booking.
On some tours the tour package will be available on arrival at your first night's accommodation. |
