Biking in the Lake District England

A four centre self guided bike tour through the Lake District in northwest England from Whitehaven to Kendal. 6 nights bed and breakfast in en-suite guesthouse or small hotel accommodations, 4 or 5 days biking with hire of a 21 speed all-terrain bike delivered to the start and pick-up at the end of the tour. Also included; luggage transfers, emergency back-up, route guide and maps. PLEASE NOTE: The only meal included in the tour price is breakfast.
The Lake District is regarded as the UK’s best loved ‘National Park’. Famous for its spectacular scenery ‘The Lakes’ have inspired many artists and writers such as Alfred Wainwright and William Wordsworth. Containing England’s highest peaks you can take a day off from the bike to walk up the fells to enjoy breathtaking views from the top. There are also options to visit historic sites and take a ferry across Lake Windermere or Derwent Water. Starting on the west coast the route follows a section of Britain’s most popular long-distance cycle ride the ‘C2C’ into the heart of the Lake District.
START : Whitehaven or Workington both on the North West Coast of England.
FINISH : Kendal in the Southern end of the Lake District near Lancaster.
ARRIVAL DAY: You can arrive at Workington or Whitehaven by train close to your first accommodation. Your first night’s accommodation is close to the start of the cycle route. There are many places to eat in the towns from fish and chip shops to traditional pubs and restaurants. Overnight: Workington or Whitehaven, Cumbria.
DAY ONE: Whitehaven to Keswick Distance approx. 31 miles (50 km). Or Workington to Keswick Distance approx. 24 miles (39 km). After breakfast the bikes will be delivered to your accommodation. Both routes start with an easy traffic-free section along a disused railway line before quiet country lanes lead you to the Lake District National Park. There is a very steep hill at Whinlatter Pass with stunning views as you climb to the top. Alternatively there is a much flatter route round the base of the fells through Cockermouth. Both routes take you to the popular tourist town of Keswick where you will say for 2 nights. Staying in Keswick will enable you to enjoy the many shops, cafés, pubs and restaurants in the town. Overnight: Keswick, Cumbria, England.
DAY TWO: A full day to discover Keswick. Distance optional. Today you have plenty of options to explore Keswick and the surrounding area on bike or on foot. There are some moderate hill walks on the fells near Keswick that are well worth the effort, giving fabulous views from the top. Alternatively there is an easy walk or bike ride around Derwent Water plus a ferry trip onto the Lake. Overnight: Keswick, Cumbria, England.
DAY THREE: Keswick to Ambleside. Distance approx 25 miles (40 km). Leaving Keswick on another disused railway line, this is a very enjoyable section following the base of the Lakeland fells to Threlkeld. There are optional detours to visit a stone circle and a nice ride round the shore of Lake Thirlmere. Today’s ride takes you through Grasmere, home of the poet William Wordsworth, finishing in Ambleside. With 2 nights in Ambleside you can make the most of this very popular part of the Lake District. Overnight: Ambleside, Cumbria, England.
DAY FOUR: A full day to discover Ambleside and Windermere. Distance optional. Today you have many options to explore Windermere and the surrounding area on a bike. At Grizedale there are forest trails providing traffic-free cycling through fabulous scenery and circular rides to places such as Coniston Water. You can also include a ferry trip across Lake Windermere with your bike. An evening meal can be obtained from the many, cafés, pubs, hotels and restaurants in the area. Overnight: Ambleside, Cumbria, England.
DAY FIVE: Ambleside to Kendal. Distance approx. 20 miles (32 km). Today you leave the Lakes but you can do some extra rides back into the Lakeland Fells to Kentmere or Sadgill. You will get a sense of isolation on these very remote country lanes. The final section is a very nice traffic-free cycle trail through Staveley and Burneside before reaching your destination of this tour, Kendal. Enjoy the rest of the day and evening exploring Kendal. The bikes will be picked up from the accommodation when you have finished. Overnight: Kendal, Cumbria, England.
FINAL DAY: Departure. After breakfast you can continue your journey from Kendal.

RAIL TRAVEL from LONDON to KESWICK (NOT included in tour price): The nearest rail station is Penrith served by infrequent trains from London Euston. Service bus X5 operated by Cumberland departs Penrith at 11:10am, 13:10pm, 15:05pm, 16:55pm and the last one is at 18:35pm. It arrives Keswick 40 minutes later.
RAIL TRAVEL from KESWICK to LONDON (NOT included in tour price): The nearest rail station is Penrith served by infrequent trains to London Euston. You may require a taxi to Penrith, if you are having an early start. Service bus X5 operated by Cumberland departs Keswick on a Sunday at 12:15am, 15:05pm, 17:45pm and 18:40pm. It arrives Penrith 40 minutes later.
ARRIVING and DEPARTING by EUROLINES or NATIONAL EXPRESS COACH: This is by far the cheapest option for long-distance travel in England, Scotland, and Wales. There are very convenient buses from each major airport. National Express carries over 16 million passengers to 1000 different places in the UK every year, and thousands more from destinations across Europe and Ireland. You can purchase an e-Ticket where you print your travel ticket online in a matter of minutes OR you can obtain an m-Ticket and have your travel ticket sent to your mobile phone - no paper ticket required. You then present this to the driver on arrival.

Discount rail tickets to the start and from end of the tour.
GRADE C cycling: Between 19-24 miles (31-39kms) a day. This route is principally a flat ride with some moderate climbs. We recommend that clients bring their own bicycle equipment helmets, clothing and shoes. If you have clip-on shoes we suggest that you bring your pedals too. You will start cycling about 10am and finish at approx. 4pm. These grades are for guidance only and will depend on weather conditions and your fitness.
