This Walk Highlands and Islands Sept 4 - 11 2010 holiday vacation can be booked by individuals but is very suitable for family groups or friends wanting to share a new experience together.
TOUR DETAILS:
A three centre guided walking in Scotland and touring in the Scottish Highlands and the western islands of Skye, Harris and Lewis September 4th - 11th 2010. 7 nights dinner, bed and breakfast, 6 packed lunches. En-suite accommodation, sightseeing and transfers to and from Inverness. Your walks will take you alongside tumbling rivers, unspoilt coastline and through little-known Highland glens. This three-centre holiday offers a wonderful introduction to Scotland's north-west Highlands and Islands. We start the trip on Saturday in Inverness, visit the islands of Skye, Harris, Lewis and the Ullapool area of the mainland before returning to Inverness the following Saturday. The drive to the Isle of Skye is along the shore of Loch Ness with a stop at picturesque Eilean Donan Castle near Dornie, under the dramatic Five Sisters of Kintail. We have two days to walk in the mountains of Skye before taking the Caledonian MacBrayne ferry from Uig in Northern Skye to Harris. Photographers will appreciate the islands unique qualities of light and landscape. We walk the coastal path from Hushinish to the sandy beaches opposite the island of Scarp and go to see Harris Tweed woven in a crofters cottage. On the Isle of Lewis, we visit the ancient Callanish standing stones before continuing to Stornoway, where we catch the ferry to Ullapool. This lively fishing village where whitewashed buildings curl around its harbour has much to offer, including traditional music in the local pubs. A walk in the Assynt area, a geologists paradise, north of Ullapool, promises a memorable conclusion to this unique highland experience.
We use quality hotel accommodation in Ullapool and Harris and a four-star guesthouse on the isle of Skye. you can be sure of a friendly welcome and wonderful meals. All single, twin and double rooms have private facilities. You have nothing more to pay on this trip as the price includes Dinner, Bed and Breakfast, packed lunch, ferry tickets, transport and guiding. Drinks are not included. DAILY and OVERNIGHT SCHEDULE of the 7 Nights Walk Highlands and Islands Sept 4 - 11 2010 tour: These are the usual booked overnight stays, walks or rides, we occasionally may have to make a late change, if so, you will be advised ahead of time or at your first guesthouse. The guided tours may be adjusted at the leaders discretion, due to weather and groups ability.
START and FINISH: Inverness is 155 miles north of Edinburgh on the Scottish east coast.
Saturday September 4th 2010: Inverness to Isle of Skye. Your North-West Frontiers guide will collect you from Inverness Station at 13:30pm. We will drive along the shores of Loch Ness to the Isle of Skye. On the way, we stop at Eilean Donan Castle, which was originally built about 1220AD. Overnight at Edinbane on the Isle of Skye.
Sunday September 5th 2010: Isle of Skye. We walk from Sligachan to a corrie (cirque) in the heart of the Cuillin mountains in the southern part of Skye. Overnight at Edinbane on the Isle of Skye.
Monday September 6th 2010: From Isle of Skye to Isle of Harris. In the morning, we walk in the Trotternish Hills in the north of Skye. The views are dramatic. We catch the afternoon ferry to Harris departing from Uig at 14:00pm and arriving in Tarbert at 15:45pm. Photographers will appreciate the unique qualities of light and landscape of Harris. Overnight at Tarbert on the Isle of Harris.
Tuesday September 7th 2010: Isle of Harris. We walk on the wonderful west coast of Harris and visit the sixteenth century church at Rodel, built by the MacLeod chieftain, Alasdair Crotach. Overnight at Tarbert on the Isle of Harris.
Wednesday September 8th 2010: Isle of Harris. We walk the coastal path from Hushinish to the sandy beaches opposite the island of Scarp and go to see Harris Tweed woven in a crofters cottage. Overnight at Tarbert on the Isle of Harris.
Thursday September 9th 2010: From Isle of Harris to the Isle of Lewis and Ullapool. We travel by bus to the Isle of Lewis, where we visit the megalithic standing stones at Callanish. We continue to Stornoway to catch the lunchtime ferry for the two and a half hour crossing through the Summer Isles to Ullapool. Overnight at Ullapool, Sutherland on the North West coastline of the Scottish mainland.
Friday September 10th 2010: Ullapool. We drive through the rugged scenery of Assynt - a land of mountains, lochs and rocky headlands. The oldest rock in Europe, Lewisian gneiss, creates a unique landscape of hummocky hills and scattered lochans, dominated by the Assynt Mountains. We have a full day walk from the village of Lochinver. Overnight at Ullapool, Sutherland on the North West coastline of the Scottish mainland.
Saturday September 11th 2010: Depart Ullapool and arrive at Inverness by 10am.
USEFUL TRAVEL INFORMATION:
TRAVEL BY TRAIN FROM EUROPE: There is a fast frequent Eurostar rail service to the new Eurostar Terminal at London St Pancras (next to Kings Cross and Euston) from Paris, Bruxelles and Lille. These stations are linked with the rest of mainland europe (France, Germany, The Netherlands, Belgium, Spain and Italy). Check Eurostar and TGV across Europe Tickets times and fares by the fast convenient Eurostar. Book your ticket in advance, turn up at the rail station and go! In the time you are waiting at an airport you can be at your destination with much less stress - travel by train. You could even bring your car with you.
RAIL TRAVEL from LONDON, EDINBURGH and GLASGOW to INVERNESS (NOT included in tour price): The nearest airport is Inverness. The nearest rail station to the start of this tour is Inverness.
We advise you to wear your boots and to pack essential items in your hand baggage, as these may be required on your journey to the first nights accommodation in Skye.
TRAVEL from INVERNESS to ISLE OF SKYE (included in tour price): We will collect you from the accommodation desk at the rail station at 13:30pm (we are unable to delay departure). This might mean you should arrive a day early.
RAIL TRAVEL from ULLAPOOL to INVERNESS (included in tour price): We depart Ullapool after breakfast to arrive in Inverness at approx. 10am. This is in time to catch trains going south to Glasgow and Edinburgh as well as the flight to London. (direct).
ARRIVING and DEPARTING by EUROLINES or NATIONAL EXPRESS COACH: This is by far the cheapest option for long-distance travel in England, Scotland, and Wales. There are very convenient buses from each major airport. National Express carries over 16 million passengers to 1000 different places in the UK every year, and thousands more from destinations across Europe and Ireland. You can purchase an e-Ticket where you print your travel ticket online in a matter of minutes OR you can obtain an m-Ticket and have your travel ticket sent to your mobile phone - no paper ticket required. You then present this to the driver on arrival.

GRADE and CLOTHING INFORMATION: This Walk Highlands and Islands Sept 4 - 11 2010 is Grade Moderate. You can check the tour grade is suitable for you by viewing our Tour Grade page.
GRADE: MODERATE The emphasis is on a leisurely pace with time to observe and interpret the area, its history and wildlife. We usually spend 5 or 6 hours walking (up to 10 miles / 16 km). Gradients are generally easy and much of the walking is on paths, although these are often rough.
You do need to be reasonably fit to get the maximum enjoyment out of a walking holiday. Our trips are graded - so you can choose the one most suited to your level of fitness and previous walking experience.

Upon receipt of your confirmation and deposit, I will confirm with the accommodation immediately and normally have a trip fully booked within a week. This will include a Trip Information Sheet specific to your tour; with overnight names, addresses and telephone numbers (similar to the draft trip information sheet on the website). You would need to take out Travel Insurance within 14 days to be fully covered. |

Upon receipt of final payment, which is due 2 months before the tour starts, I will air mail you the maps, notes and a further copy of your trip information sheet. If we do not receive the final payment we will presume you have decided NOT to go-ahead with the tour, and we will therefore cancel the booking. On some tours the tour package will be available on arrival at your first night's accommodation. |
