The Regimental Museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers 23rd Foot
DESCRIPTION: The Regimental Museum of the Royal Welch Fusiliers 23rd Foot... The Regimental Museum was established in the Queen's Tower of Caernarfon Castle in 1960 after its old home in the Regimental Depot at Wrexham was closed down. It was set up by the Trustees from the private funds of the Regiment and is registered as a charity with the Charity Commission. The exhibits tell a story covering almost three centuries of the proud history of the oldest infantry regiment of Wales. Raised by Lord Herbert of Chirbury in 1689 it was known as Herbert's Regiment until 1702 when it was selected as one of the three regiments of the line to be armed with the new flintlock musket or fusil and was given the title of the Welch Regiment of Fusiliers. The Royal Welch Fusiliers has always retained its separate identity and has resolutely clung to the old English spelling of Welch in its title in spite of persistent opposition from high authority.
