A History of Scotland
DESCRIPTION: A History of Scotland... An ideal volume for anyone wanting a brisk overview of North Britain from the year dot to the twentieth century. From an initial general chapter on Scotland before 1100, Mrs Mitchison charts in chronological sequence Scotland's political, social and economic struggles down to the present day, relating major movements in Scotland, such as the Reformation or the Enlightenment, to their wider scale. For the particular benefit of the general reader she goes behind the common abstractions of historians (including the myths commonly accepted in the nineteenth century) in order to emphasise the pressures exerted on individuals in the past by geography and climate, primitive technology and social discipline, and to clarify the forces that have shaped institutions. The later chapters of the book emphasise that, owing to her limited and specialised natural resources, Scotland's struggles today are in many ways as crucial as they were at the time of the War of Independence.
